SUSAN POINT

JOURNEY OF ENLIGHTENMENT, 2024

“Within my sculptures, I am attempting to recognize a place in time. The eight different designs comprising Journey of Enlightenmentare an opportunity for the St. George’s community and students to experience a Musqueam journey like no other. These designs standas windows, or open gateways to not only our history, but our understanding of the wider history of this site and its surrounding lands.

This artwork aims to bridge the connection between our communities. Within the four chapters of the storyboards, the imagery consists of canoes, salmon, halibut, a wolf, a heron, kingfishers, sturgeon, cattails, ravens, eagles, hummingbirds, grass (relating to the Musqueam People as “People of the Grass”), orcas, butterflies, and male and female welcome figures both presenting coppers (which is a symbol of wealth). A pair of Salishans on the central butterfly imagery represents future generations. The canoes along the bottom of each of the storyboards represent an honouring journey of knowledge, as this artwork is for a school and education is a journey.”
