MARIANNE NICOLSON

She Sews Colour Over Black Gold, 2023

This artwork mimics the beadwork and/or button work of Indigenous Peoples of the Northwest Coast. The coloured metal discs are composed into the shape of various flowers and plants significant to the location. These plants were identified by Cease Wyss (Skwxwu7mesh, Sto:lo, Hawaiian and Swiss). The plants depicted are Silverweed, Wapato, Camas, Nodding Onion and Chocolate Lily. The artwork celebrates the importance and contribution of Indigenous women to healing in both community and the land. It seeks to remind the viewer of what was here before the City of Port Moody.
